With the rise in heavy vehicles exceeding speeds of 60km/h, controlling lorry speeds has become essential for road safety. To address this, the Traffic Police are implementing a new regulation that requires all lorries to stay within the speed limit of 60km/h. This will be rolled out progressively from 1 January 2024 to 1 July 2027 through the installation of speed limiters.
A speed limiter is a device installed in vehicles to prevent them from exceeding a preset maximum speed. It electronically regulates engine power once the set speed is reached, regardless of how much the driver accelerates. In Singapore, all lorries must comply with this new regulation. Non-compliance carries fines of up to $2,000 or jail for up to 6 months.
